Telkom has historically been terribly expensive for international calls, and did everything they can to eliminate competition in the long distance call market. During the last few years however, VoIP providers have been popping up, offering massive savings on Telkom's high prices. Vox has been one of the more successful South African VoIP providers, and offers huge savings on calls to certain international destinations. Skype also offers massive savings on international calls, and many countries are in fact cheaper to call than a cellphone in South Africa.
