WiMAX is a wireless technology that provides fairly substantial transfer speed & high reliability, and is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard. Neotel has been quietly rolling out WiMAX base stations across the country, predominantly in the Johannesburg area, although Cape Town also has a few peppered here and there.
Below is a summary of the three WiMAX options available from Neotel, with further info below the table. We've thrown in a WiMAX vs ADSL comparison in for good measure. Prices include VAT |

Customers who exceed the fair usage limit will see their speeds limited until the end of the month, which in our opinion though this is obviously not an uncapped solution. Uncapped means just that - uncapped, as in not subjected to a cap. We're not a big fan of the ways SA companies twist English to fool customers into thinking something is something it's not. Customers need to be aware of the fine print at all times and look past the martketing language to uncover what is really being offered.
So far this offering's cup is overflowing with fail and the uptake definitely won't prompt Guinness to add a new category to the record books. Points earned for great upload speeds, but they're cancelled out by the the 35GB soft cap on a supposedly uncapped connection, as well as the high price.
