Google's Android operating system has helped smartphone makers Samsung and HTC roughly double their market share, as the smartphone market accelerated in the first quarter from a year ago, according to IDC.
Nokia, Apple and RIM paced the smartphone market with 24.3 percent, 18.7 percent and 14 percent market share for Q1, respectively.
While Apple's iPhone has proven to be a juggernaut for Apple, Nokia saw its share bleed heavily, falling from 38.8 percent in Q1 2010. RIM dropped from 19.1 percent ove... |

Church spires in parts of Norfolk will be used to emit broadband signals to help provide high-speed internet access to rural communities.
Church visitors will also be able to log on from within the nave to find out more about a building's history.
The idea is a business venture between the Diocese of Norwich and local broadband provider Freeclix.
David Broom, from the diocese, said he hoped the first church would "go live" in the next few weeks.
About a dozen churches across the Broads area, sou... |

More bad news for RIM's Blackberry: A recent survey of cell phone users shows Google's Android is continuing to gobble up its market share.
In online forums, consumers cite Android's superior user experience, the broad selection of carriers and handsets that offer its operating system, and its array of innovative applications as reasons why they are migrating to Google.
Those sentiments are put into focus by the latest MobiLens survey, spelling more trouble for Blackberry, which has been in free-fall ... |

A Reuters article suggests that both Facebook and Google are in the running for some sort of joint venture with consumer voice-over IP (VoIP) giant Skype. While the promise of reaching Facebook's millions of users must be compelling to Skype, a tie-up with Google could bear real fruit for both organizations, especially in the small business world.
While details of what form such an alliance may take are slim, one likely and enticing candidate is the creation of an online collaboration suite that would ri... |

Google has been saying that it wants to operate a symmetrical 1-Gbps network to stimulate new applications taking advantage of such bandwidth. Some Google executives might add that Google also expects to make money supplying the service.
What Google doesn't say so much is that it hopes to prod access providers to follow suit, essentially changing consumer expectations about what a standard offering should be. To that extent, Google probably can claim its first clear success: a new decision by the Austral... |

Imagine being able to download three-months-worth of HD video in one second. If it sounds implausible, its not. Two different research groups have been working on a way to speed up fiber optic technology to record-setting broadband speeds.
When the first commercial fiber-optic communications system was developed in 1975, it operated at a bit rate of 45 Mbps. Today, we have speeds of 109Tb per second which is drastically improved. New Scientist said that the route between New York and Washington D.C., wh... |

A new, ultra-fast wireless Internet network is threatening to overpower GPS signals across the U.S. and interfere with everything from airplanes to police cars to consumer navigation devices.
The problem stems from a recent government decision to let a Virginia company called LightSquared build a nationwide broadband network using airwaves next to those used for GPS. Manufacturers of GPS equipment warn that strong signals from the planned network could jam existing navigation systems.

According to figures released today by ABI Research, Android will be on 45% of smartphones shipped in the year 2016, as it will take up most of the market share vacated by the soon-to-be-defunct Symbian operating system. Although Android will come to be the dominant player in the smartphone market, this doesn't mean that others will necessarily see a big cut in their own market shares.
In fact, ABI projects that Apple's iOS will see its market share rise from 16% in 2010 to 19% in 2016, while Research ... |

After a lukewarm reception from television buyers, 3-D technology is pushing its way onto small screens.

How fast is your broadband? M-Lab, a partnership between the New America Foundation and Google meant to measure Internet connections, has given Google two years worth of actual broadband connection data, as measured by users. That's more than 300TB of data, which Google has imported into its Public Data Explorer for easy viewing and analysis. The results are remarkable.
Measuring Internet access has been tricky for years. Sascha Meinrath of the New America Foundation told Ars back in 2009, when M-Lab go... |
