Letting mobile devices "nap" while waiting for access to public Wi-Fi could help extend battery life, according to researchers.
When smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices access Wi-Fi, they often have to wait for other gadgets to finish downloading before they start, sapping battery life.
Letting them rest while queuing could as much as double battery life, claims researcher Justin Manweiler, of Duke University in North Carolina.
While queueing for data, his software SleepWell will switch o... |

Apple has contracted with Pegatron Technology to build 15 million iPhone 5 smartphones, according to DigiTimes.
The Taiwanese publication sourced unnamed "upstream component makers" for the information, as Pegatron itself apparently refused to comment. "The sources pointed out that as the iPhone 5, which does not seem to have any major update from iPhone 4, is already set for shipment in September," read the July 5 report, "they are already started supplying components to Pegatron with Pegatron's plants ... |

According to a survey by Meraki, nearly 60 percent of people now access the web through mobile phones, compared to a mere one-third last year. IPhones and iPads still take the largest chunk of Wi-Fi usage, but the Android devices are catching up fast from its measly one percent a year ago.

One of the major drawbacks of Apples iOS platform, fans of GoogleҒs Android will tell you, is the lack of ability to play Flash videos on the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.
For a while, many websites on the Internet included some kind of interaction with Flash technology, and so it seemed crazy that Apple was denying users access to all that content by not making nice with Adobe and finding a way to support the software. Apple CEO Steve Jobs claimed Flash was too battery intensive, and that supporting... |

On Tuesday, the group classified radio frequency electromagn... |

The U.S. Department of Justice today called for new laws requiring mobile providers to collect and store information about their customers, a proposal that pits it against privacy advocates and even other federal agencies.
Jason Weinstein, the deputy assistant attorney general for the criminal division, picked an odd place to describe the department's proposal: a U.S. Senate hearing that arose out of revelations about iPhones recording information about owners' locations, and, in some cases, transmitting... |

VOICE OVER IP (VoIP) and chat Skype for Mac users will get an update this week closing a dangerous security hole that can allow a hacker to take over a Mac computer simply by sending a message.
Gordon Maddern of security firm Pure Hacking first discovered the vulnerability and created a proof of concept exploit using the Metasploit tool. Apples iPhone has been an unbridled success since its launch in 2007. Apple announced earlier this year that it has sold over 100 million iPhones since that launch. Now that the device is available to Verizon customers and the long-awaited white iPhone is finally on store shelves, AppleҒs star only continues to soar.
Android-based devices, on the other hand, arent necessarily as successful in relation to the iPhone as the sales figures would suggest. As a whole, Android-based smartphones are easily... |
