Set to debut this week at CES, the Renew might not pack the latest in multimedia features, but it's 100-percent recyclable and comes billed as the "world's first carbon-neutral phone." Plus: Moto's new "touch tablet," which might—or might not—be coming to the States.
On tap for T-Mobile subscribers in the first quarter (no pricing details yet), the Renew is as basic as they come—no camera, Wi-Fi, 3G, or even EDGE data access.
Instead, the Renew is Motorola's stab at an "environmentally responsible" hand... |

HTC's last QWERTY keyboard phone was a well specced hulk of a thing that could fill any pocket.
The HTC S740 is a much slimmer, more svelte affair, measuring just 43mm across, which somehow makes its 17mm depth feel like less than it really is.
It's not HTC's best looking handset, bearing a passing resemblance to a cordless home phone with its boxy shape, though the reflective front has a certain style and the rubberised plastic back, with similar angular styling to the HTC Touch Diamond, feels classy... |

The Nokia N85 is another solid N-series phone but if you're looking for something different this won't be your bag.
From the model number, you'd think the N85 is a lesser version of the famous N95, but it's actually an upgrade. Is this a case of Nokia running out of ideas, or is it merely honing a deservedly popular phone? We took a good look at the N85 to see whether Nokia has cracked it again.

The N85 is a solid-feeling slider phone that's smooth around the edges, giving it a more u... |

That 52-inch, flat-screen television on the family room wall may have a terrific picture, but there's a big drawback: It's an energy hog.
State regulators are getting ready to curb the growing power gluttony of TV sets by drafting the nation's first rules requiring retailers to sell only the most energy-efficient models, starting in 2011.
The consumer electronics industry opposes the regulations, expected to pass in mid-2009, and claims that they could remove some TVs from store shelves and slightly b... |

Security researchers have uncovered a serious vulnerability that affects Nokia Series 60 phones (e.g. the N95, N73, etc) and can stop your mobile from receiving any SMS or MMS messages.
Dubbed the “Curse of Silence” by Tobias Engel of the Chaos Communication Congress, the exploit involves sending a specially formatted SMS message to the target phone. Phones running version 2.6, 2.8, 3.0 or 3.1 of Symbian S60 will be unable to receive any further messages and will require a factory reset to start working ... |

The glitch that froze many older Zune music players should now have been cleared, says Microsoft.
Many owners of 30GB Zune players found that the gadget froze up on the last day of 2008, thanks to a problem with software on the device.
But, said Microsoft, players should function properly once fully charged and switched on again on 1 January.
However, some Zune owners were still reporting lingering problems with their portable player.
Disgruntled owners filled Microsoft's support forums with com... |

Internet Explorer's market share plunged by a record-setting amount during December, Web metrics vendor Net Applications Inc. said today.
Microsoft Corp.'s browser lost 1.6 percentage points of its market share last month, ending December with a 68.2% share, down from November's 69.8%. Since the end of October, IE has lost 3.1 percentage points, nearly half of its total 2008 losses.
IE ended the year down 7.9 percentage points, a 10.4% decline in its share since December 2007.
Not surprisingly, the... |

LG plans to debut a 3G-enabled mobile phone that fits on your wrist. A 1.4-inch touch screen, Text-To-Speech feature, Bluetooth capability and MP3 playback make it an instant curiosity, so why did they decide to call it the LG-GD910?
Those James Bond films from the 1970s sound sillier by the day, and not only because the plot of Moonraker makes less sense with every passing day. Gone are the days when a watch containing a radio or even a television screen was the height of technology. LG Electronics says... |

iFart, therefore I am (the #1 iPhone app). Or something like that. iFart is fast becoming one of the most popular iPhone/iPod Touch applications out there. The developer of iFart, Joel Comm, has been pretty forthcoming with sales figures, and on his blog he noted that over Christmas Eve and Christmas day, more than 58,000 people purchased a copy of iFart, netting him over $40,000 dollars in just two days.
iFart, as the name suggests, is a $.99 novelty iPhone app that plays a wide variety of fart sound... |

The Touch Diamond was originally released in black, but the white color scheme has been spotted several times without being officially announced. The Touch Diamond features a 2.8" VGA resolution touchscreen display, with WiFi and a built-in GPS receiver... |

Uh-oh. Nokia isn’t going to like this. Its all-you-can-eat Comes With Music service is now open to piracy from pesky hackers, able to strip downloaded songs of their precious DRM, all for just a few quid.
It seems Comes With Music’s Microsoft-powered Digital Rights Management coding can be easily stripped away by Tunebite, a naughty bit of software available for just €20, or £17.50.
It works by playing tracks at speed and re-dubbing them into a non-encrypted file, rather than hacking the DRM in the tr... |

Mobile broadband will move closer to competing with ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) on more equal terms when latency improves and data speeds increase to a theoretical 21M bps (bits per second), according to Peder Ramel, CEO of mobile operator 3 Scandinavia.
High Speed Packet Access Evolution, also known as HSPA+, Evolved HSPA or HSPA Evolved, is the technology that will make the higher speeds and the lower latency possible.
"We see mobile broadband as a direct competitor to ADSL, and our su... |

If you’re keen on buying new Sony kit any time soon, you might have to save a little longer. The company just announced it’s cutting 5% of its global workforce, and even plans to increase prices of its products to stave off financial troubles.
Announcing the move this morning, the Japanese superfirm said: “Sony intends to adjust product pricing to mitigate the impact of the appreciation of the yen, curtail or delay part of its investment plans, and downsize or withdraw from unprofitable or non-core busin... |

LG Electronics Inc. claimed a step forward in the commercialization of the next generation of Internet capable handsets, demonstrating a modem chip with a download speed eight times that of the fastest mobile phones currently on the market.
The South Korean company unveiled the chip, created for a technology standard known as Long-Term Evolution, or LTE, at a research lab in Anyang, just outside Seoul, on Tuesday.
The so-called fourth generation technology, still under development, is vying with the r... |
