We get hands-on with the Touch HD to see if it lives-up to its spec sheet. Read on to find out how this Windows Mobile behemot...

Dell first: 256GB solid-state drive on laptops

16  Jan  2009
Dell is doing its part to usher in the age of the super-sized solid-state drive. For the first time, Dell laptops can be configured with the newest large-capacity SSDs from Samsung. Back in the day (last January), laptop buyers were stuck with a Henry Fordesque choice: order any solid-state drive you want with your laptop as long as it's 64GB. What a difference a year makes. On Friday, Dell quadrupled this to 256GB. The Samsung SSD is now available as an option on Dell's XPS M1330 and M1730 laptop lin...

Skype: Broadband Is Defined As 50Mbps

15  Jan  2009
As the Obama administration moves into the nation's capital, Skype President Josh Silverman was in town this week to shake hands and kiss babies among members of Congress and policy mavens. Skype wants to make sure its views are heard on net neutrality, wireless openness, the universal service fund, E-911 and national broadband policy. While Skype is, in Silverman's words, "a little piece of software," the company wants to make sure that its software runs unfettered on any computing device consumers use,...

Burglar gets caught by Facebook

14  Jan  2009
Facebook is big and getting bigger as a way to fight crime in Australasia. Following the news that the site was used to deliver legal papers to a errant couple and track down restaurant bill-dodgers in Oz, police in New Zealand have used the site to catch another crim. An unnamed 21-year-old - who got too hot while trying to break into a bar's safe and took his balaclava off - saw video and images of him posted on the social networking site for identification. "The offender was identified after a m...

HTC's 2009 roadmap leaks

13  Jan  2009
As far as roadmap leaks goes, this has to be one of the most substantial ever, as HTC's entire 2009 product line seems to have made it online and it looks like we're in for a few surprises. No exact launch dates or hardware specifications have leaked, but it's still an interesting leak, as all of the devices are pictured. First up is the Iolite, which has already been leaked thanks to Expansys and you can find a lot more details on it here, but to keep things brief, the Iolite has a 2.8in screen, a 528MH...

Two Google searches 'produce same CO2 as boiling a kettle'

12  Jan  2009
A typical search through the online giant's website is thought to generate about 7g of carbon dioxide. Boiling a kettle produces about 15g. The emissions are caused both by the electricity required to power a user's computer and send their request to servers around the world. The discovery comes amid increasing warnings about the little-known environmental impact of computer and internet use. According to Gartner, an American research firm, IT now causes about two per cent of global CO2 emissions a...

New York judge OKs Amazon Tax

12  Jan  2009
A New York Supreme Court judge has approved the state's new-fangled Amazon Tax. Bransten handed down her final dispositions in the two cases, which have been watched with a certain amount of trepidation by online retailers because of t...
