The battle for control over the internet is intensifying with Google, Microsoft and even the network providers trying to gain a bigger slice of the pie. This battle is, however, not only limited to trying to create or own internet properties like the most successful search engine, the biggest web mail platform or the largest video hosting website. The war has spilled over into the

Hands-On with the BlackBerry Flip

11  Sept  2008
There's a fresh crop of BlackBerrys out this week, and we have a big handful of 'em. I got some quality time with the BlackBerry 8220 Pearl Flip and the Nextel BlackBerry Curve 8350i at the CTIA trade show this week, aided by Research in Motion Product Manager David Smith. The Pearl 8220 is a decently sized flip phone when closedit doesn't feel particularly big or small, and it

10  Sept  2008
Everyone who has owned a cellphone over the last ten years should at some point pour one out in thanks to Cliff Kushler, one of the inventors of the T9 text entry system that knows you mean "DONKEY" when you type 366539 in an SMS. Now Cliff is smartly shifting his focus on touchscreens with Swype—a way to type blindingly fast on a touchscreen by tracing your finger or stylus over

Apple’s new target: 12.8 million iPhones in 2008

9  Sept  2008
There’s been a lot of confusion about what Jobs meant when he set that sales target for the iPhone in January 2007. The giant screen behind him showed “10M units” — 10 million being roughly 1% of the nearly 1 billion mobile phones sold worldwide in 2006. But did Jobs mean that Apple would try to sell a total of 10 million phones in 2007 and 2008? Or did he mean 10 million phones in
