Google's Android was the fourth most popular operating system on smartphones sold in the first quarter, research firm Gartner said on Wednesday, putting the company in a good position as handsets look set to surpass computers for browsing the Web.
Android, which was in 10 percent of smartphones sold in the quarter, still lags Nokia's Symbian, Blackberry-maker Research in Motion and Apple.

Microsoft has unveiled the next version of Hotmail, showing off several new features which already exist in rival Google's Gmail.

Twitter has revealed that it has over 105 million registered users, with 300,000 new users signing up every day.
The Twitter API handles 3 billion requests per day which, according to co-founder Evan Williams, "makes Twitter about the same size as Yahoo." He said the service has grown 1,500 percent each year on average since "Twitter Inc." was founded three years ago.
The service also handles around 19 billion searches every month, compared to about 90 billion for Google.

According to data from Arbor Networks, or all but the world's two largest ISPs, Google carries more internet traffic than all other ISPs in the world.
If Google were an ISP it would be the fastest-growing data carrier on the planet, with its size matched only by two unnamed tier 1 providers. Google was contributing to around six percent of the world's internet traffic as of mid-2009.

Internet hardware company Cisco Systems has unveiled a router that is potentially capable of transferring data at up to 322 Terabits per second (Tbps), or around 32 times faster than a regular 100Mbps home computer network.

Google has said that from 1 March some of its services such as Google Docs, would not work "properly" with Internet Explorer 6, the browser identified as the weak link in a January 2010 cyber attack on the search engine. The company urges users to upgrade their browser "as soon as possible".

UK psychologists have said there is a strong link between heavy internet use and depression, finding that 1.2 percent of people surveyed were "internet addicts", and many of these were depressed.
The conclusions were based on 1,319 responses to an on-line questionnaire, and recruitment was via links on social networking sites.

Microsoft is investigating another flaw in its popular Internet Explorer browser. The new vulnerability affects users running its browser on older operating systems, which could result in an unauthorised disclosure of information.

Last month people were searching more than any month during the year, with Google the clear winner in the search engine stakes.
ComScore release a study last week showing that 46 percent more searched were made in December 2009 than during the same period in 2008. Search giant Google has increased its efforts to get traction for Google Voice on the iPhone by launching a new version of the Google Voice service.

Facebook users are being offered a free 'firewall' that monitors their pages, in real time, for malicious posts, links and spam.
The app, called Defensio 2.0, monitors all Facebook posts in real time against Websense's ThreatSeeker Network, a database of problem URLs. The app then decided if a post is malicious or unwanted.

Google's video-sharing site YouTube will take its first steps into the online movie rental business on the 22nd of January, with an initial tome of only 5 different movies.
