The world's biggest chip maker, Intel, has unveiled the chipset it is banking its immediate future on and one it hopes will shake up the market.
The product, code-named Sandy Bridge, is Intel's first architecture to merge a microprocessor and graphics processor onto a single chip.
It is designed to cut the time it takes to produce images.

Apple Inc. confirmed it will end its offer to give away free cases to iPhone 4 owners, which the company instituted in July after a barrage of complaints about dropped calls as a result of the phone's unique antenna design.
The company also said that iPhone 4s purchased after Sept. 30 would be subject to its normal return policy, whereby the customer can return the phone within 30 days for a full refund.

Domain-name registrar and Web-hosting service GoDaddy.com is putting itself on the auction block and could sell to a private equity firm for more than US$1 billion, according to a report.
Citing unnamed sources, The Wall Street Journal said Frank Quattrone's Qatalyst Partners has been hired to shop around the Go Daddy Group, parent company of GoDaddy, which has long been known to the general public for its racy Super Bowl commercials.

Scientists have shown off a system they say could "substantially" improve the data capacity of fibre optic networks.
The team says the growth in bandwidth-hungry applications such as YouTube and iPlayer will eventually stretch the limits of long-distance fibre links.
Their improved system would eliminate most of the interference caused by other signals and amplifiers, in an analogue of "auto-tune" software.

Police targeted 48 sites in countries including Britain, the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Hungary.
The suspects were the alleged leaders of four illegal file-sharing networks and were charged with hacking, piracy and computer fraud.
Five of the arrests were in Belgium and the others were made in Norway and Sweden.

Intel is aiming for a slice of the smartphone market with a new chip with built-in graphics.
The move would put it in direct competition with ARM, who design the majority of smartphone chips.
Intel will unveil its new chipset at its Developer Forum conference in San Francisco next week.

Almost two-thirds of people in the world have been hit by cyber crime in some capacity, be it from viruses, credit card fraud or identity theft, a report has shown.
The most serious threat by far is malware, which was responsible for 51 per cent of cyber crimes affecting victims surveyed by Norton.
Just 10 per cent of those hit by cyber crime said they had been duped by an online scam, while phishing hit nine per cent and social network profile hacking seven per cent.

Samsung announced a whole lot of new gizmos today, ranging from the new SF, RF, QX and NF series of note- and netbooks, a new Wave smartphone running on Samsung's open Bada OS to a 4G netbook.

Google said Sept. 1 Gmail users made more than 10 million calls through its new Call Phones from Gmail feature since it launched a week ago.
Launched Aug. 25, Call Phones from Gmail lets users place calls to contacts directly from Gmail. Calls placed from Gmail in the United States and Canada are free and start at 2 cents per minute outside those countries.

Google could be ready to turn Gmail into a communications hub by adding the ability to make phone calls from the Google Chat interface.
CNET has learned that Google is testing a Web-based service within Gmail that will allow users to place phone calls from their in-boxes.
