Small businesses want choice and competition in the broadband service market, but they're not getting either one, says a new government report.
The study from the Small Business Administration's Office of Advocacy - called "The Impact of Broadband Speed and Price on Small Business" - noted that broadband "is central to U.S. small businesses in ways that it is not to individuals."

Daily malware growth hit a new level in the third quarter, with an average of 60,000 new pieces seen every day, McAfee has found.
The recently-acquired security giant also identified more than 14 million unique pieces of malware over the period - one million more than in the third quarter of 2009.

China's Tianhe-1A supercomputer has been confirmed as the most powerful in the world.
Confirmation came with the publication of the latest list of the Top 500 supercomputers on the planet.
Tianhe-1A has a peak speed of 2.57 petaflops, far higher than the US XT5 Jaguar that can manage 1.76 petaflops.
The list also reveals significant changes in the technology used to power the machines and the nations hosting the most powerful ones.

The US Air Force has warned its troops that using Facebook and other social networking sites could inadvertently reveal their location to the enemy.
The warning, posted on an internal website and sent to commanders, concerns new technology allowing users to pinpoint their location on the map.
It said careless use could have "devastating operations security and privacy implications".

A woman in China has been sentenced to a year in a labour camp after posting a message on the social networking website Twitter.
The fiancee of human rights activist Cheng Jianping told the BBC she had been accused of disrupting social order, but her message had been a joke.
She had repeated a Twitter comment urging nationalist protesters to smash Japan's pavilion at the Shanghai Expo, adding the words "Charge, angry youth".

Facebook has long been a one-way valve. You put data in so you can connect with friends, and then you cant get it out and use it the way you would like to, even as the company is trying to corner the market on your identity.

There was a "significant breach" of the Data Protection Act when Google collected personal data via its Street View cars, the UK's Information Commissioner has ruled.
But Google will not face a fine or any punishment, Christopher Graham added.
Instead, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) will audit Google's data protection practices.

Google is suing the US government, saying it was unfairly excluded from a USD58m deal to revamp e-mail systems at the Department of the Interior.
In a lawsuit filed with the US Court of Federal Claims, Google says the terms of the five-year contract rule out its products and favour rival Microsoft.
The search giant wants to offer its Google Apps software for the contract.

Google has filed a complaint in the US Court of Federal Claims against the US Department of the Interior (DOI) for allegedly barring it from bidding for a USD60 million cloud contract due to security concerns.
The DOI had allegedly invoked a "Limited Source Justification" procurement clause, which according to Google, meant that only Microsoft could bid for the work with its Business Productivity Online Standard (BPOS)-Federal platform.

A team of volunteer web archivists have released a chunk of defunct hosting service Geocities as a 652 Gigabyte torrent file.
Yahoo! closed the pioneering personal webpage hosting service in October last year without archiving the sites.

Turkey has lifted its ban on YouTube, two years after it blocked access to the website because of videos deemed insulting to the country's founder.
Transport Minister Binali Yildirim, who is in charge of internet issues, said the government had been in contact with Google, which owns YouTube.
Mr Yildirim said there was no longer any reason to ban the website, because the offending videos had been removed.

DSL vendors are using a variety of methods such as bonding several copper lines, creating virtual ones and using advanced noise cancellation to increase broadband over copper to several hundred megabits per second.
At the Broadband World Forum in Paris, Nokia Siemens Networks became the latest vendor to brag about its copper prowess. It can now transmit speeds of up to 825M bps over a distance of 400 meters, it said on Monday.
