Small businesses want broadband choice, competition

19  Nov  2010
Small businesses want choice and competition in the broadband service market, but they're not getting either one, says a new government report. The study from the Small Business Administration's Office of Advocacy - called "The Impact of Broadband Speed and Price on Small Business" - noted that broadband "is central to U.S. small businesses in ways that it is not to individuals." The small business adoption rate of broadband was at 90 percent when the study was conducted in April 2010, compared to 65 ...

Chinese woman jailed over Twitter post

19  Nov  2010
A woman in China has been sentenced to a year in a labour camp after posting a message on the social networking website Twitter. The fiancee of human rights activist Cheng Jianping told the BBC she had been accused of disrupting social order, but her message had been a joke. She had repeated a Twitter comment urging nationalist protesters to smash Japan's pavilion at the Shanghai Expo, adding the words "Charge, angry youth". Twitter is banned in China. However, many people use it by circumventin...

Facebook's new messaging system

15  Nov  2010
Facebook, with more than 500 million users communicating with each other daily, is looking to reinvent communications - and not just email. The company today is introducing a three-pronged system that strives to not necessarily change the way we communicate but to make it more efficient, more personal and definitely simpler. And, of course, Facebook wants to make it seamless across the platforms and devices were already using. At a press event in San Francisco this morning, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerber...

Google points finger at Facebook hypocrisy, blocks Gmail import

6  Nov  2010
Facebook has long been a one-way valve. You put data in so you can connect with friends, and then you cant get it out and use it the way you would like to, even as the company is trying to corner the market on your identity. And Thursday night Google called out its rival on such data-portability hypocrisy: It banned the huge social network from allowing its users to connect their Gmail contacts to see who among them are also on Facebook to get the friending frenzy started. Previously a Facebook user c...

One billion users accounts for around a quarter of the global GSM market. Huawei reached the milestone when it completed the construction of a GSM network for MTN Nigeria. Google in 'significant breach' of UK data laws

3  Nov  2010
There was a "significant breach" of the Data Protection Act when Google collected personal data via its Street View cars, the UK's Information Commissioner has ruled. But Google will not face a fine or any punishment, Christopher Graham added. Instead, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) will audit Google's data protection practices. The move marks a U-turn for the ICO which originally ruled that no data breach had occurred. Last week the ICO vowed to look again at the evidence, after th...

Google sues US in software battle

2  Nov  2010
Google is suing the US government, saying it was unfairly excluded from a USD58m deal to revamp e-mail systems at the Department of the Interior. In a lawsuit filed with the US Court of Federal Claims, Google says the terms of the five-year contract rule out its products and favour rival Microsoft. The search giant wants to offer its Google Apps software for the contract. But Google says it was told that only Microsoft's business software could be used - a move it called "arbitrary". The Departm...

Google barred from Government cloud deal

2  Nov  2010
Google has filed a complaint in the US Court of Federal Claims against the US Department of the Interior (DOI) for allegedly barring it from bidding for a USD60 million cloud contract due to security concerns. The DOI had allegedly invoked a "Limited Source Justification" procurement clause, which according to Google, meant that only Microsoft could bid for the work with its Business Productivity Online Standard (BPOS)-Federal platform. The clause permits an agency to bypass usual competitive proces...

Geocities becomes 652GB torrent

1  Nov  2010
A team of volunteer web archivists have released a chunk of defunct hosting service Geocities as a 652 Gigabyte torrent file. Yahoo! closed the pioneering personal webpage hosting service in October last year without archiving the sites. But the Archive Team - coordinated by ASCII blogger Jason Scott - last week stepped in on the one-year anniversary of the closure, compressing an unknown slice of Geocities down to a single file which it made available on peer-to-peer site The Pirate Bay. "What we ...

Turkey lifts two-year ban on YouTube

30  Oct  2010
Turkey has lifted its ban on YouTube, two years after it blocked access to the website because of videos deemed insulting to the country's founder. Transport Minister Binali Yildirim, who is in charge of internet issues, said the government had been in contact with Google, which owns YouTube. Mr Yildirim said there was no longer any reason to ban the website, because the offending videos had been removed. Insulting Mustafa Kemal Ataturk or "Turkishness" is illegal in Turkey. The video clip promp...
