Internet hardware company Cisco Systems has unveiled a router that is potentially capable of transferring data at up to 322 Terabits per second (Tbps), or around 32 times faster than a regular 100Mbps home computer network.
Dubbed Carrier Routing System 3, the system is 12 times faster than its closest competitor which is Juniper Networks TX Matrix Plus which has a maximum throughput of of 25 Tbps.
The Carrier Routing System 3 announcement came nearly six years after Cisco announced CRS 1, which has a maximum throughput of 92 Tbps.
According to Cisco, with CRS3 "Every man, woman and child in China can make a video call at the same time. It enables new generation of collaboration built around video, and it brings the services of cloud to life."
The CRS-3 would be available before the end of this year and pricing for the new router is said to start at USD90,000.
AT&T is currently trialling CRS 3 to test 100 Gigabit per second and 40 Gbps services in Florida and Louisiana.
Cisco hopes to have the system commercially available from October this year.
