The company's services went down in the area, after an underground gas leak sparked the blast, damaging Telkom's exchange, as well as adjacent buildings. Two people were injured. The company earlier believed a municipal transformer had caused the explosion. The blast affected some voice, data, DSL and 60 mobile cellular operator links in the area, which it is in the process of restoring... |

Speaking to ITWeb, one customer, Benzi Kornizer, explained that, after using MTN's data service for months, the company is now trying to debit R10 000 from his account. "I received a letter from MTN, with no... |

Although it is tempting to believe that the high and stable historical growth trend in the telecommunications industry revenue will persist and thus continue to support the investment case for most telecomms companies, Allan Gray's experts believe that such a simplistic conclusion is inappropriate. According to Jan Silvis writing in Allan Gray's quarterly commentary circulated on Monday: "After an extended period of high growth we would argue that the risks are to the downside." "As investors," he said, "... |

Downtime on Telkom's SAT-3 undersea cable left customers without international Internet access for several hours yesterday afternoon. According to Telkom, the SAT-3 consortium had planned work on a segment of the cable between Accra, in Ghana, and Abidjan, in the Ivory Coast. The consortium planned downtime of between four and six hours; however, a failure caused the capacity blackout to last longer. Telkom says the branching units responsible for powering the cable experienced a problem, leaving a mass... |

Neotel assured its Internet users that the recent international Internet connectivity problem, due to a failure of the SAT-3 cable that connects Cape Town to Europe, will not affect Neotels network. Angus Hay, NeotelҒs Executive Head of Technology, said Neotel Internet customers including local Internet Service Providers, businesses and consumers were unaffected by the interruption, since Neotel uses multiple cables, such as SAFE and SEACOM. "The break of SAT-3 cable had no impact on our Internet customers... |

The Competition Tribunal is preparing for a pre-hearing where Telkom will be required to present its case in a long-standing competition investigation. The tribunal says all parties are now filing their official documents in lieu of a pre-hearing where the official date for the case against Telkom will be decided. Telkom has declined to comment on the matter; however, it is likely preparing its defence for the case. The case stems from a complaint submitted by the then value-added network service provider... |

VODACOM yesterday hit out at former CEO Alan Knott-Craig's main accuser, saying he is a disgruntled former manager who was dismissed for perjury. At the weekend, the Sunday Times reported that in 2008 the Vodacom board commissioned an investigation of claims that Knott- Craig misused his position to further the interests of family members. Vodacom is opposing a Labour Court subpoena to release the report, prepared by accountants KPMG, in connection with a continuing Labour Court case. Yesterday, Vodacom ... |

The Wireless Application Service Providers' Association (Waspa) is clamping down on content providers that breach its code of conduct. However, an analyst has argued that the association does not have enough power, and the duty to protect subscribers is actually a network operator issue. Recently, there has been a flurry of complaints on consumer site HelloPeter, with people saying they are being billed for content for which they did not subscribe. One complainant states that his daughter, aged 11, replied... |
