Vodacom has confirmed it is testing an LTE product for high-speed wireless broadband. The company says it has been looking at the option for some time; however, this is the first test where the LTE equipment has been pulled together with its existing network infrastructure. Vodacom can't confirm whether it will roll out the test to its customers, since a commercial product will depend on many aspects of the regulatory environment. Most notable is the available spectrum that operators will need to produce... |

The Competition Appeal Court on Friday upheld an appeal by telecommunications group Telkom [JSE:TKG] through its subsidiary Trudon against a decision handed down in April by the Competition Tribunal, in which interim relief was granted to Directory Solutions (DS) against Telkom. Trudon is owned 64.9 percent by Telkom and publishes the official telephone directories, the white and yellow pages, on behalf of Telkom. DS asked the Competition Tribunal for an interim relief order to make it compulsory for... |

Cellular group Vodacom [JSE:VOD] is running tests on long-term evolution (LTE) technology that will replace current 3G standards for mobile internet connectivity. At a demonstration on Thursday, the company displayed connectivity at speeds many times that of present 3G and ADSL connections. CEO Pieter Uys told journalists it is not yet certain when LTE will be available to the public, although all Vodacom's towers are already compatible with the new standard. He said that frequency would be required to... |

Telkom has left its broadband line rental and post-paid call rates unchanged while hiking basic line rental costs by about 5 percent. In its annual tariff filing with the Independent Communications Authority of SA, the fixed-line operator says it could have hiked its basket of rates by as much as 19,3 percent, but has declined to do so. Telkom SA MD Nombulelo "Pinky" Moholi says Telkom has not taken advantage of the regulatory allowance because it has a "commitment to the process of ensuring affordable... |

JSE-listed communications services provider Telkom is confident that its price changes will be approved by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa). "Telkom has decided to file an overall increase of only 0.8 percent in the interests of customer-centricity as well as our commitment to the process of ensuring affordable telecommunications access in the country," said its managing director Nombulelo Moholi. There would be no change to its monthly Digital Symmetrical Line and Do Broad... |

Telkom is expected to announce normalised headline earnings in the range of 5% up to 15% down when it releases its annual results for the year ended March on Monday. A consensus of leading financial services groups listed by I-Net Bridge points to an expected fully diluted headline earnings per share of 514.5c and a dividend per share of 250c for the year. The Competition Commission will not back down in its investigations into alleged abuse of dominance by Telkom, despite the real possibility of Telkom going to court to stop the commission in its tracks. The commission expects Telkom to argue that it has no jurisdiction over the telecoms sector, a move that will be reminiscent of Telkom's failed court action last year. In 2009, the commission referred five complaints against Telkom to the Competition Tribunal - the country's highest competition authority.... |

Tens of thousands of soccer fans will today converge on Joburg's iconic stadium, Soccer City, as SA kicks off the first match of the Fifa Soccer World Cup 2010 against Mexico. The stadium has been one of the focus areas for all the telecoms providers in SA and considerable investments have been ploughed into it to ensure all fans stay connected during the matches. It is from this investment that the operators say their legacy will stem, when the tourists and fans start heading back to normal life next mo... |

Telkom needs a steady hand at the helm, its captain leaves the ship. The unexpected departure of the fixed-line telecom operator's CEO, Reuben September, could not have come at a more testing moment. "I think the timing is disappointing," says Cadiz Asset Management portfolio manager Mark Ansley. September, who retires from his position and resigns his directorship at the expiry of his contract in November, leaves just as Telkom's market is maturing and mobile operators are gunning for the company. Telkom... |

Former SABC chief executive Dali Mpofu, who left the public broadcaster under a cloud of controversy, was tipped to be in the running for the soon-to-be vacant top position at Telkom, unions linked to the firm said yesterday. Two union officials, who did not want to be named, said the company had already interviewed two candidates for the top job, who included Mpofu. One of the officials refused to disclose the name of the second candidate, but revealed that Mpofu was interviewed on Thursday last week.... |

Telkom rival Neotel reported a net loss of nearly R1,6bn in the 2010 financial year, according to information accompanying Tata Communications' recently released annual results. It's the first time that India's Tata Communications has revealed the extent of the losses being incurred by its SA subsidiary. The steep 2010 loss raises fresh concerns that the country's second fixed-line operator, licensed in 2005, is losing its way, especially in the retail consumer market where its strategy of taking on the... |

A top regulatory expert has lambasted the Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) over its planned auction of spectrum for wireless broadband services, saying the process is deeply flawed. Dominic Cull of Ellipsis Regulatory Solutions says there are a number of serious flaws in the process of licensing spectrum in the valuable 2,6GHz and 3,5GHz bands. Cull's concerns should be taken seriously, especially given the strategic economic importance of the frequency in question. The mobile operators,... |

Telkom and trade unions, including Solidarity, are on the verge of reaching a salary agreement for the 1 000 employees in the utility's Data Advance Services division, with hopes for a settlement this week. A statement issued by Telkom yesterday says it has been in constant engagement with organised labour." At a recent company forum (27 May), a joint proposal was agreed to by all parties, but all three labour unions that represent Telkom's bargaining unit staff wanted to 'socialise' the proposals with t... |
