Fur flies over Telkom ADSL prices

14  Nov  2005
South Africa's broadband consumer lobby group MyADSL on Friday said Telkom's new ADSL pricing structure would result in local subscribers paying 1 000% more than other subscribers around the globe for a similar service. The new billing structure, introduced on November 1, is on a per-usage system. However, it does not apply to the Cape Town-based internet service provider (ISP) Dotco, as the High Court is yet to make a ruling following the ISP's complaint against the introduction of the new billing struc...

Telkom’s broadband rip-off continues

14  Nov  2005
It’s official: South Africans pay at least 1 000% more than international counterparts for high-speed, high-download internet services. This shocking statistic, brought to light by online consumer forum MyADSL, comes as a new pricing regime from fixed-line operator Telkom – which dominates control to internet access in South Africa – started on November 1. MyADSL’s Rudolph Muller says that with the new pricing structure, a high-download (30 gigabyte (GB) unshaped) account using an international sta...

'Cheaper to fly than use ADSL'

14  Nov  2005
If you don't eat or stay over, you could fly to Hong Kong and download 100 gigabytes of data from the Internet, fly back to South Africa and pay less than if you were to download that amount of information using Telkom's ADSL service. Even taking into account the duration of the return flight, you could be back in South Africa days before you could complete the download here. This is according to Durban software developer Stuart Gunter, who has posted on an Internet forum the findings of an investiga...

The three members of Telkom’s executive committee placed on leave of absence in September pending an internal enquiry have left the company. Recently appointed CEO Papi Molotsane refused to explain the circumstances around their departure or the reasons that lead up to their apparent suspension. Molotsane said merely that he had to take action on the individuals when he arrived at the group, but: “As of a few minutes ago, the issues have been resolved. We have agreed to part ways.” The three were fo...

Leapetswe (Papi) Molotsane: CEO, Telkom

14  Nov  2005
ALEC HOGG: Well, Belinda Anderson is in the studio now, as is Papi Molotsane, the chief executive of Telkom. Now, Belinda, I have really boosted the next interview that’s coming up, not least because Telkom have had some pretty good financial results, they are paying special dividends, they are paying a big interim dividend, and there’s a lot of shareholders who are standing by waiting to hear. So perhaps you could give Mr Molotsane a tough curve ball to start off with, and after that, Papi, maybe Belinda w...
