Telkom revealed its ADSL user figures at its latest financial results presentation earlier this week. While there's been steady growth over the past few years, the last few months have seen a sharp decrease in new users compared to previous years. And Telkom only has itself to blame for this. The last time ADSL line costs were reduced was way back in 2007, and since then, the price has stayed the same. The fact that users still pay for a separate phone line rental is another bone of contention. According... |

ANC Members of Parliament delivered a clear message to Telkom last night that it must follow government's telecommunications strategy, as government is the utility's largest shareholder. The message came from two prominent ANC politicians last night, at a dinner in Cape Town hosted by Telkom. The event formed part of the introduction of its new mobile arm, 8ta, and also presented highlights of its future strategy and the release of Telkom's latest results. The dinner was hosted by several key Telkom... |

There was an air of despondency at Telkom's interim financial results presentation this week. But after several strategic missteps, the group is finally promising to get its house in order. It had better move quickly: rivals are gaining fast. Telkom's results in the six months to 30 September 2010 paint a picture of a company in steady decline. In voice services, in particular, the business is going backwards. The number of fixed lines in service has fallen by more than 160 000 in the past year. And the... |

A private arbitration has ruled that Telkom must reinstate its former chief of operations Motlatsi Nzeku, who was dismissed in February 2009 for compiling a dossier containing defamatory allegations against the then chief executive, Reuben September, and other senior staff at the company, and releasing it to a newspaper. The ruling, handed down by senior advocate Danny Berger, was made on September 23. The dossier alleged instances of conduct which Nzeku claimed constituted infractions of company policies... |

With a deadline set for the unbundling of the local loop infrastructure, Telkom has begun negotiations with the Department of Communications (DOC) to ensure the terms and conditions of this exercise are also favourable for the fixed-line operator. The local loop, or last mile, is the copper link between the end-user and Telkom's network and is currently owned by the company. The local loop unbundling (LLU) process includes a number of regulatory interventions aimed at providing new market entrants access... |

Telkom is funding the bulk of the capital cost of rolling out its mobile arm, 8ta, from money it gained selling its stake in Vodacom. Telkom expects to spend a maximum of R6 billion on building a mobile network over the next five years. The company spent R614 million in the first six months of the year and is in the process of constructing 2 000 base stations. Telkom unbundled its 50 percent stake in Vodacom in the middle of last year, selling 15 percent to Vodafone and listing 35 percent on the JSE.... |

Vodacom will soon have a fresh new brand and marketing image, TechCentral has learnt. Though details are sketchy, it's believed a new - or, at the very least, tweaked - corporate logo and identity are in the offing. Vodacom has become synonymous with its green and blue branding and analysts says it will be instructive to see how much the group changes its brand. Could it adopt parent Vodafone's bright red identity? There are no plans - at least not yet - to change Vodacom's name to Vodafone, says Portia... |

Reflecting on the six months to September, acting Telkom CEO Jeffery Hedberg has acknowledged the company's poor performance is indicative of an organisation under pressure. SA's largest fixed-line operator, Telkom, will exit its struggling CDMA business in Nigeria, but could end up spending as much as R1.3 billion to sell out of the unit, which it bought into three years ago. Multi-Links has been a thorn in Telkom's foot ever since the company initially invested in Nigeria, in 2007. The fixed-line operator has written the unit down by more than R5.6 billion since entering the West African country. Telkom bought 75 percent of the company in May 2007, for R1.96 billion. In... |

A competitive market and challenging regulatory environment have contributed to Telkom's difficulties in the last six months. Telkom released its interim results for the six months ended 30 September 2010 today, revealing a 5.3 percent decrease in normalised headline earnings per share from continuing operations to 265.7 cents per share.
