Telkom is continuing to invest in building fibre infrastructure closer to its customers as well as in new broadband digital subscriber line (DSL) technology, but it hasn't yet decided what sort of line upgrades it will offer to end users. The company recently began upgrading users of its 4Mbit/s DSL lines to 10Mbit/s in areas that can support it, but Bashier Sallie, MD for wholesale and networks, downplays recent speculation about imminent plans to upgrade some customers to 20Mbit/s. "None of that is firmed... |

Telkom yesterday unveiled its mobile data and voice packages targeting corporate clients and promises savings of up to 25 percent. While existing mobile offerings include bundled voice and data offerings, none includes the fixed- line component. By adding mobile data and voice to its portfolio for companies, Telkom hopes that this will put it in a strong position to defend its market share, and become a one-stop shop for clients. "Telkom Business Mobile will combine the best aspects of both its fixed and... |

Despite pledges of a "new Telkom" at its AGM this week, CEO Pinky Moholi failed the transparency test by not revealing to curious shareholders just why it made secret payments of R66.5-million to six executives in the past two years. Telkom used R66.5-million of its investors' cash partly to fix a series of blunders made by previous management, including paying a R12-million settlement payment to someone it had fired, and another R5.7-million as a settlement to someone who quit - more than five times his... |

Telkom has launched its mobile offerings for business, proclaiming it will lead in fixed-mobile convergence and in cloud computing in the business market in SA and saying it is looking forward to be an "attacker" in the mobile space. Brian Armstrong, MD of Telkom Business, says fixed-line operators around the world have traditionally taken a defensive line in protecting their businesses. "But," he says, "in mobile, were looking forward to being the attacker for a change." The company has introduced... |

Telecommunications operator Telkom on Thursday launched its Telkom Business Mobile offering, taking it one step closer to fixed mobile convergence (FMC), with the operator stating that it aimed to launch converged services from January 2012. Current mobile offerings include bundled voice and data offerings, but no fixed-line component, which would signify a converged offering. Telkoms fixed-line infrastructure would enable it to be the first operator to bundle mobile communications to its existing offering... |

TELKOM executives were grilled yesterday about the companys slow progress in increasing the number of independent nonexecutive directors on its board and also paying a R12m settlement following a private arbitration with an unnamed employee. Shareholder activist Theo Botha criticised Telkom for not disclosing the names of the top three earners, as required by the King 3 code, and questioned why the company paid a whopping settlement. The employee is one of the top three earners at Telkom who pocketed a... |

Fixed-line operator Telkom and three unions representing about 70 percent of its workforce are still in talks this week, in a bid to prevent a crippling strike. Solidarity, the Communication Workers Union (CWU), the South African Communications Union and the telecoms company have been in negotiations for about five months over a two-year wage deal that was meant to come into effect in April. Although Telkom has failed to meet unions' demands, labour is holding off on mass industrial action, and is instead... |

SA's incumbent fixed-line operator, Telkom, should be considering a strategic fibre-to-the-home project to ensure customer loyalty and to grow its revenue streams in new areas, says Gartner principal analyst Will Hahn. Hahn, speaking to TechCentral at Gartner's annual Symposium ITxpo in Cape Town last week, says building fibre to the home is a way for Telkom to "get ahead of the curve" and create a "truly sticky service proposition" for its customers in a market that is increasingly dominated by mobile... |

The final appeal committee of the Advertising Standards Authority has dismissed a last attempt by Cell C to have a ruling that the "4Gs" term it used in its advertising was in breach of the authority's advertising codes overturned. The committee has awarded costs to complainants Vodacom and MTN. In a decision handed down by the committee's Mervyn King on Monday, it says the appeal is "dismissed with costs, which shall include the costs of counsel on behalf of Vodacom, taxed on the party-and-party basis as ... |

The National Consumer Commission's Mamodupi Mohlala revealed that she has served the major cellphone operators in South Africa with compliance notices, after they refused to amend their current customer contracts, which would also explain their call rates. Cell C is expanding its network coverage in the Western Cape, with the connection of its network in Paarl and Wellington.
