The fees, known as call termination rates, are coming down over a three-year glide path, reaching 40c/minute for mobile calls next year and between 12c/minute and 19c/minute for calls to and between fixed-line networks. "At the time...

Cable theft in SA has become a crisis and this is in large part Telkom's fault, according to Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications chairperson Sikhumbuzo Eric Kholwane. He explains that Telkom is aware of the cable theft problem since it has been going on for a long time, but there isn't enough satisfactory action against the crime, or to correct the situation after the crime. Strangely enough SA leads African telecoms

2  Feb  2012

Consumer probe unlawful – MTN

23  Jan  2012
An investigation by the National Consumer Commission into MTNs subscriber agreements and service quality was unlawful, the cellular operator argued before the National Consumer Tribunal on Friday. It also said a compliance notice issued to MTN by the consumer watchdog was sent to the wrong party. The hearing is the first under the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), which was implemented in April last year. MTN is challenging a compliance order notice it received compelling it to amend its subscriber agreements...

ISPs raise concern over data carry-over

23  Jan  2012
The Internet Service Providers' Association (Ispa) has warned the "apparent intention" of the National Consumer Commission to force Internet service providers to carry over prepaid data purchased by consumers for up to three years could drive up broadband prices. "If section 63 of the Consumer Protection Act is deemed by the commission to be applicable to the payment in advance for data and other electronic services, we predict that it will have the effect of driving up prices considerably," says Ispa...
