Let's not cut telecoms cake until everyone comes to empowerment party

The rather soft calls by the government for the transformation of the information and communication technology (ICT) industry in the past few years have fallen on deaf ears.

The recent complaints by communications director-general Andile Ngcaba and parliamentarian Nkenke Kekana about the ICT sector being pale and male will not result in any quick change.

Most of the companies they referred to have done practically nothing more than acknowledge the need for transformation.

Yet these same companies have not been shy to tell the government it should move fast to end Telkom's monopoly in fixed-line telecommunications. They have complained about how expensive it is to do business because of the lack of competition.

Some have slammed certain aspects of the Electronic Communications and Transaction Act, called the e-commerce law.

Criticism of this law has tended to focus on aspects such as the domain name authority, intended to transform the internet industry to serve everyon ...
