Cellphone costs reined in

Prepaid cellphones users and top-end contract subscribers are the main beneficiaries from the latest cellphone tariff adjustments by Vodacom and MTN.

Vodacom's tariff adjustments, which were effected as of last month, increased by as much as 4.7 percent.

Rival MTN, whose tariff adjustments would be effective from October 5, said it had increased its cellphone rates for contract subscribers by up to 4.8 percent on average.

All the effective increases are below the 8.9 percent consumer price inflation for the period from July last year to June of this year, and have been approved by the Independent Communications Authority of SA.

Vodacom's biggest increase is on the monthly subscription for its Weekend Everyday product, which went up 4.7 percent to R135.

But Vodacom said the upper-end users of its Talk 1000s package would enjoy a 0 percent increase.
