Telkom hits back at unions
Johannesburg - Telecommunication services company Telkom on Tuesday denied union criticism that its restructuring process was flawed.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has lambasted Telkom's restructuring and retrenchments, saying is not as genuine and clean as the company is portraying it to be.

Telkom has announced a restructuring plan, key to which is the retrenchment of workers for the next five years so that the company should have a workforce of about 28 000 by the year 2007.

Telkom media relations senior specialist Andrew Weldrick told I-Net Bridge that the company continues to review, streamline and refocus its business in response to the changing market in which it operates.

"It does this by identifying growth opportunities and continuously improving efficiencies, productivity and containing costs," he said.
