The UK is still on track for the best broadband in Europe by 2015, claimed the Government minister responsible for the pledge.
Jeremy Hunt, minister for culture, media and sport, is today unveiling plans albeit similar to pledges made earlier this year ֖ for everyone in the UK to have a minimum of 2Mbps connections by 2015.
This is a much longer period than was set out by the previous Government which pledged 2Mbps for all by 2012 ֖ but Hunt claimed the money to fund such a scheme wasnt ... |

Verizon Wireless launched its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in 38 major metropolitan areas on Sunday and also began selling a 4G USB modem from Pantech.
The Pantech UML290 supports Windows XP 32-bit, Vista 32/64-bit (SP2) and Windows 7 32/64-bit operating systems. It will work on the carrier's new 4G LTE network, which provides speeds 10 times faster than its current 3G network, Verizon Wireless said. Customers can expect download speeds of 5 to 12 Mbps and upload speeds of 2 to 5 Mbps in 4G mobil... |

BT is aiming to deflect criticism of the speed of British broadband with a trial of 1Gbit/sec fibre.
BT has come under fire in the past week for dropping the minimum speed of its fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) connections to only 5Mbits/sec and from an Ofcom report that showed the UK was lagging far behind other leading nations on superfast broadband.
Now, BT says it will conduct a trial of 1Gbit/sec fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) early next year, in a bid to prove just how fast its fibre network can opera... |

The UAE has one of the highest rates of fibre optic penetration in the world, according to new findings by an industry body.
Fibre optic connections enable almost unlimited volumes of digital data to be transmitted using pulses of light. The technology is replacing traditional copper wiring for broadband internet networks.
The UAE is now ranked fourth in the world, with 30.8 per cent of the country's households and businesses connected to fibre optic systems, behind Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong.

The African continent will have 13 submarine cables by the end of 2011, a process that will redefine the technology environment and set the continent on a major broadband explosion, Sadiq Malik, director of operations at Broadband Communication Technologies (BCT) told a workshop at the Africa Media and Broadcasting 2010 Congress at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.
"Traffic on the world's networks is being increased by 46 percent annually starting from 2007 until 2012. As a result, there wil... |

The first ever broadband satellite to be launched in Europe is due for the skies tonight and thousands of consumers living in secluded corners of the UK could benefit.
Avantis HYLAS 1 will be blasted into space on an Ariane 5 rocket from French Guyana at around 18:39 GMT.
The ң120 million satellite will use KA-Band technology, a very high frequency radio spectrum, to deliver broadband services of up to 10Mbps, Avanti said.
European Space Agency and the UK Space Agency were also involved in fu... |

The latest generation of wireless Internet that will allow people to watch a crystal clear movie or live sporting event on the street or atop a hill is being deployed throughout Hong Kong.
The Long Term Evolution (LTE) network will give super high speeds across the city and could mean the end of computers ever needing to be plugged into a wall for a connection to the net.
The so-called "fourth generation" system is being rolled out by Hong Kong mobile network operator CSL in partnership with telecoms ... |

Broadband speeds in Europe have risen sharply in only a year, suggest official EC figures.
In July 2010, 29 percent of broadband lines in Europe ran at speeds of at least 10 Mbps, revealed Commission research.
By contrast in July 2009 only 15 percent of broadband lines were capable of hitting that speed.
Despite the higher rates, the Commission warned that a lot of work needed to be done to meet Europe-wide targets on access and speed.
"Fast broadband is digital oxygen, essential for Europe's pr... |

The UK's largest cableco, Virgin Media, is looking to emulate Cablevision of the US and build out Wi-Fi to add a wireless element to its TV and broadband services. It said it was "actively exploring" the potential of creating a massive public Wi-Fi network.
This would go head-to-head with UK incumbent telco BT, which has also invested heavily in Wi-Fi hotspots and hotzones to provide on-the-road coverage for its broadband and triple play customers, without a mobile network.

As part of its 100 million investment plan in next generation networks over the next five years, GO has begun successfully deploying higher-speed fibre broadband internet technologies in a number of localities, as well as providing speeds of up to 100 megabits per second (Mbps) in specific areas of Malta.
In July, GO announced that it was investing 100 million over a six-year period starting from this year as part of its technology roadmap which will see it launching next generation networks such as ... |

Virgin Media has launched a petition to end the misleading advertising of broadband speeds.
If there's one ISP that knows how to whip up a controversial PR stunt it is Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Media. The company has announcing a marketing campaign so that punters don't get duped by the claimed speeds achieved by other broadband services.
Virgin Media is even going so far as calling the advertised speeds of other ISPs dishonest and claimed that the average speeds of so-called "20Mb" services manage... |

Nearly a quarter (24 percent) of firms are using broadband packages aimed at home users, says Consumerchoices.co.uk.
Research by the comparison website revealed many firms use consumer packages because they believe they are 'cheaper'. However, they run the risk of breaching their ISP's terms and conditions, as well as suffering from poor connection speeds and a lack of bandwidth to run business applications.
More than two in five (41 percent) firms say speed is the most important factor when choosing ... |

INDEPENDENT MPs are poised to save Labor from having its $43 billion NBN subjected to a Productivity Commission cost-benefit analysis.
The prospect of reprieve came as the opposition yesterday hardened its criticism of the massive project, insisting it would entrench inequity by offering broadband services at higher than necessary prices that would be out of reach of the poor.
Julia Gillard emphatically defended the NBN, ruling out a cost-benefit analysis and warning that failure to improve broadband ... |
