BT is boosting Britain's attempt to remain at the top of the global broadband market with plans to install a network at Ebbsfleet in Kent that offers speeds 20 times faster than the average UK household connection. At least two major Western Internet providers will have Internet access topping the 100 megabit per second (Mbps) mark before the end of the year, according to announcements. Verizon (NYSE:VZ) has announced that small and midsize businesses that need to upload large files, such as engineering designs, complex financial documents, X-rays, legal files and data backups, can now do so using the company's symmetrical FiOS Internet connections at speeds of up to 20 Mbps.

The first iPhone Trojan has been seen in the wild, according to security vendors.
The first warnings about the Trojan were posted on Saturday on the iPhone modification forum ModMyiFone.com, said security vendor F-Secure. When installed, the Trojan appeared to do nothing more than display the word "shoes", according to the ModMyiFone post.

Microsoft Corp, Google Inc and Yahoo Inc agreed to a settlement worth $31.5 million to resolve accusations that the companies promoted illegal Internet gambling, the Justice Department said on Wednesday.
The companies were accused of receiving money from online gambling businesses to advertise illegal betting from 1997 through 2007.

Greek telecom incumbent Hellenic Telecomms (OTE) said that it will cut the tariff on its ADSL internet service called Conn-x by 44.5 pct effective from Dec 17 to all new and existing customers.
OTE explained that it will also upgrade connections speeds from 768/192 Kbps to 1024/256 Kbps free of charge.

Broadband firms could face formal action if they fail to give consumers accurate information about the speed they will get when they sign up.
The warning comes from Ofcom as it moves to ensure that net firms do not oversell broadband in advertising.
Customers should get specific data about the speed on their line or be able to back out of the deal.
The regulator said new guidelines on the selling of broadband should come into force early in 2008.

According to Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), the Eurasia cable system is expected to increase the capacity on this route by 1.28 terabit by 2009.

Broadband over powerline is emerging as "a winner" in the worldwide race for multimedia home networking, experts reported today.
In-Stat predicts that the networking technology, which requires no new cabling, will gain momentum over the coming years.

Kyocera, the manufacturer of the iBurst technology behind Personal Broadband Australia's wireless broadband service, has announced a new desktop modem that will double download speed to 2Mbps.
It will not require any upgrade to an iBurst network: the speed doubling will be achieved by aggregating two data streams for a single user. The Office of the Telecoms Adjudicator published it's report for November and said that the UK had 3.552 million unbundled LLU lines and forecast that there will still be strong demand in the near future for LLU but this to start levelling out a bit in the medium term.
Migrations appear to be one of the biggest issues that is brought up in the report as something that is going to need continued improvement as more customer start to look at swapping deals for better ones between providers.
