Comcast Tests User Throttling

5  June  2008
Comcast is testing a new method of managing network traffic that would target heavy users instead of the applications favored by bandwidth hogs. Comcast claims only a handful of users are clogging its broadband network and slowing it down for the vast majority of users. In testing beginning in three markets June 6, Comcast plans to compile a blacklist of its heaviest users who may find their Internet speeds slowed during peak network hours, regardless of the software used to download files. Comcast insis...

4  June  2008
AT&T has upgraded its 3G data network, and the new speeds are something to behold. With the new upgrade, expected to be complete across the 3G network by the end of June, users of the LaptopConnect wireless Internet service will see speeds of up to 1.7Mbps, a 20% increase over the former downlink speed. Uplink speeds get a boost, too, up to 50% in some areas, which translates to 1.2Mbps. These are seriously fast connection speeds, rivaling T1 lines and most home DSL. They’re fast enough to watch streamin...

Comcast to target bandwidth hogs

4  June  2008
Comcast, under fire for the way it treats subscriber Internet traffic, will start tests this week to see if it can avoid traffic jams by targeting neighborhood bandwidth hogs rather than file-sharing programs. The tests will be conducted in Chambersburg, Pa., and Warrenton, Va., starting Thursday, and later this summer in Colorado Springs, a Comcast spokesman said Tuesday. The Federal Communications Commission is looking into complaints that the company, which has 14.1 million Internet subscribers, is...

How quickly will you shoot past Time Warner’s 40GB bandwidth cap?

3  June  2008
How quickly would you reach Time Warner’s 40GB data cap? I’d be finished in like a week. No lie. By now you’re probably well aware of Time Warner’s scheme to charge you by the gigabyte. Arrington wrote a piece yesterday on TechCrunch saying how it would destroy innovation—how can YouTube et al. make money if no one has the bandwidth to watch videos, or whatever?—and all that. But I’m not really interested in whether or not YouTube or some band new social network for left-handed people succeeds or fails; ...

European telcos are likely to subsidize Apple's new version of the iPhone, say analysts. Exclusive Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) partner O2 is expected to sell the hotly-anticipated 3G iPhone for about $196 or £100, according to a report by the U.K's Times Online, citing a UBS analyst report. The speculation follows a story first reported by Fortune.com that AT&T (T, Fortune 500) was planning to sell the new iPhone this summer for around $200. Apple CEO Steve Jobs is widely expected to unveil the faster, ...

Touring Broadband Britain

2  June  2008
I'm writing this in a hotel with a view across to the Isle of Skye, borrowing a slow broadband connection in a place where there's no mobile phone signal and the local phone-box is my only other means of communication. It's the starting point for our tour of Broadband Britain, which gets underway on TV, on radio and online from today. The aim is to assess the speed and state of broadband at the moment - and take a look at the technologies which could promise faster speeds and more mobility in the years t...

Thai govt hampering country's 3G adoption

2  June  2008
Thailand launched its first 3G commercial trial last month, but government regulations and limited hardware continue to hamper the technology's rollout in the kingdom, industry observers said. Thailand's biggest mobile service operator Advanced Info Services (AIS), launched on May 6 its 600 million baht (US$5.3 million) digital 3GSM service along with a commercial trial in the country's northern city of Chiang Mai. The service operates on the 900MHz frequency transmitting on High Speed Packet Access (...

ISP reporting network to pierce bandwidth smokescreens

76  May  2008
ISP watchers have launched a bid to get to the bottom of what's going on with UK broadband by recruiting people to install specially-adapted network gear on their line, to collect reams of independent performance data. The initiative to improve the transparency of ISP packages is being led by Samknows.com. The site is aiming to attract 200 volunteers who'll be sent a free tweaked Linksys router that will measure and report download speeds for HTTP and non-HTTP traffic, latency, packet loss, DNS response,...

Google shows off 'Android' software

29  May  2008
Google showed off its nearly completed mobile software system to about 3 000 computer programmers on Wednesday, hoping to cultivate more services and advertising for people on the go. Although brief, the demonstration at the Internet search leader's annual developer conference in San Francisco represented the most extensive public look so far at "Android" - an open-source platform being designed for "smart" phones and other mobile devices that surf the web. Android was first announced nearly seven month...

Comcast Hijackers Say They Warned the Company First

29  May  2008
The computer attackers who took down Comcast's homepage and webmail service for more than five hours Thursday say they didn't know what they were getting themselves into. In an hour-long telephone conference call with Threat Level, the hackers known as "Defiant" and "EBK" expressed astonishment over the attention their DNS hijacking has garnered. In the call, the pair bounded freely between jubilant excitement over the impact of their attack, and fatalism that they would soon be arrested for it. Defiant...
