In a few hours from now, there is a good chance that as part of The Steve Jobs Show, Apple will introduce a brand-spanking new, 3G iPhone. It has some folks I know in the wireless world not really looking forward to the big surge of traffic such an 3G-capable iPhone will bring to their networks. Think of it as an iPhone-inspired stress test for their high-speed wireless networks.
In July 2008 June 2007, when Apple released the original iPhone, it ran on the 2G networks using a technology called EDGE. Des... |

The world is at an all time digital high. In the Philippines, a huge number of hotels, cafes and restaurants have started following the Wi-Fi trend. Schools have also begun offering free Wi-Fi connection at designated areas, if not the whole campus. However, this connection also has a habit of popping out where you least expect it.
If you’re a Wi-Fi nut who’s feeling a bit religious, you’ll be glad to know that some churches are now equipped with accessible Internet connection. Although it would be best ... |

More than 30 broadband providers including BT, Virgin Media and TalkTalk have signed up to a voluntary code of conduct designed to prevent consumers being mis-sold high-speed internet access packages.
Broadband advertising has become increasingly controversial because internet service providers (ISPs) often promote the theoretical maximum speeds achievable on their networks rather than the speed most customers can actually get.
A recent survey by the comparison website Broadband Expert found that actu... |

Broadband competition in New Zealand has heated up, with Vodafone today introducing its new, high-speed 'Red' network.
The launch of the ADSL2+ network has been made possible by 'local loop unbundling' - allowing companies to install their own equipment in Telecom exchanges - which began last year.
Vodafone chief executive Russell Stanners said the company had already unbundled over half of Auckland's exchanges, and would have completed all 41 by the end of the October.
The network, expected to run... |

Verizon Communications agreed on Thursday to buy Alltel for about $28.1 billion, including the assumption of debt, creating the nation’s largest cellular telephone provider.
The deal catapults Verizon’s wireless business ahead of AT&T Wireless, which falls to No. 2, followed by Sprint Nextel and Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile. The combination of Verizon, based in New York, and Alltel, based in Little Rock, Ark., will create a company with more than 80 million subscribers. Verizon adds coverage in Midwest an... |

As we noted yesterday, one of the fondest dreams of the recording industry is to get Internet service providers to help them police the content flowing across their networks. Now, British ISP Virgin Media has taken a halting step in that general direction by agreeing to work with the BPI, the UK equivalent of the RIAA which represents the interests of the recording industry in that country. The agreement will have Virgin sending out warning letters to those who the BPI has identified as sharing copyrigh... |

Bellevue-based T-Mobile USA Inc. is suing Starbucks Corp., alleging that the world's largest coffee chain breached a contract by letting a rival company supply customers with free wireless Internet service.
In its 12-page complaint, filed Thursday in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan, T-Mobile alleged breach of contract, interference with contract and unfair competition over a recent Starbucks Wi-Fi promotion with AT&T Internet Services Inc., which T-Mobile claims risks overloading its lines and ... |

Just as a cellular industry trade association released a scathing letter against a proposal that would deliver free wireless Internet access across the country, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission decided not to vote on the proposal next week as planned.
The FCC had expected to vote on June 12 on a proposal to auction a 25MHz piece of spectrum in the 2155Mhz band and require the winner to use a specified amount of spectrum to deliver free wireless Internet access. The plan would also require the o... |

The man appointed to examine why the UK has been left behind many other countries in the roll-out of super-fast broadband believes there is no need for a panic-stricken attempt to catch up.
Francesco Caio, who is shaping government policy on next-generation internet infrastructure, said yesterday mounting concern about the lack of high-speed broadband connections in the UK might be misplaced.
The results of a review lead by Mr Caio, a former chief executive of Cable & Wireless, will not be published f... |

Surging demand for wireless broadband access is already hampering the growth rate of fixed-line broadband in Australia.
The rapid growth of wireless, helped by pricing pressure among the four mobile carries, has persuaded Goldman Sachs JBWere to increase its market penetration estimates for wireless broadband for the next three years.
As part of its new estimates, GSJBW has raised its Telstra share price target from $5.27 to $5.41 - 71c higher than yesterday's closing price of $4.70.

Leaked images and specifications have led to much speculation about the new Samsung SGH-i900, a Windows Mobile 6.1 PDA-phone. We had one in our hands for a few brief moments, and bring you this quick and dirty hands-on.
When we put it beside an iPhone (see more pictures of that after the jump), it was uncanny how similar its shape was to Apple's product. It's thicker than the iPhone but shorter in length. Typically Samsung, the i900 feels solidly built and has a brushed metal finish all around.

Best Buy's Speakeasy broadband division is offering quite a deal for businesses that need more than DSL can offer in most markets, the service-level commitment of a T-1 (1.5 Mbps up/down) line, and high symmetrical bandwidth: what they're calling Business Ethernet, with 10 Mbps upstream and downstream starting at $1,295 per month.
While that's no co-location speed--where 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps Internet backhaul is common--it's still plenty good enough for moderately busy Web sites, and for companies that nee... |
