The fixed-phone market has suffered due to problems within TDM and competition from mobile pho...

Koreans take 100Mbps broadband for granted

16  June  2008
The majority of South Koreans rate their broadband services as 'ordinary' despite having the world's fastest internet connections, according to a recent survey. Korean broadband providers typically offer speeds of 100Mbps. However, the government-sponsored Korean Communications Commission (KCC) found that no service provider consistently provides this level of service. The fastest '100Mbps' service was delivered by LG Powercomm with an average speed of 91Mbps, the KCC found. The average speed of al...

Report: Faster Internet Speeds are Top Priority for Customers

13  June  2008
A new Pike & Fischer Broadband Advisory Services survey has revealed that even though communication industry service providers are promoting a lot of new services like HDTV, video content distribution, video on demand (VoD), the best way to maintain customer loyalty and attract newer ones is to provide them with faster Internet connections. The survey shows that more customers see their broadband speeds as an important factor. If you don’t have a telecommuting program, how much revenue is your business l...

Google To Develop ISP Throttling Detector

13  June  2008
Google has been very vocal on its stance for net neutrality. Now, Richard Whitt--Senior Policy Director for Google--announces that Google will take an even more active role in the debate by arming consumers with the tools to determine first-hand if their broadband connections are being monkeyed with by their ISPs: "We're trying to develop tools, software tools...that allow people to detect what's happening with their broadband connections, so they can let [ISPs] know that they're not happy with what the...

UK's first caller ID-spoofing service shuttered after five days

13  June  2008
Spookcall, the UK's first caller ID-spoofing service available to the general public, has decided to close less than one week after launch. We reported the launch of the controversial service on Monday. It allowed anyone to impersonate any other phone number on a call recipient's caller ID display. Spookcall also offered customers the ability to disguise their voice using software. It cost £5 for every 10 minutes of faked calling. In the US very similar systems have been used since 2004 by private inv...

Telstra considers reselling ADSL2+ to rival ISPs

12  June  2008
Telstra has done an about-face on its broadband wholesale strategy by suggesting it might be willing to resell ADSL2+ high speed internet services to rival ISPs. Telstra, which had delayed its switching on of more then 900 ADSL2+ exchanges for three years until April this year, has traditionally denied competing ISPs access to its ADSL2+ network in fear that the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) would force it to resell the connection to competitors at low-ball prices. At the time ...

BT's '100Mbps' trial deemed a waste of time

12  June  2008
A trial of BT's high speed fibre broadband has been described by experts as "the lowest fibre service in Europe". The fibre broadband trial will take place in Kent, but will start by offering just 2.5Mbps. Five different speeds options will be available in total to the 300 newly built homes in Ebbsfleet, Kent, ranging from 2.5 to 10Mbps. Upload speeds will range from 0.5 to 2Mbps. Some options will, however, also feature 'bursts' of faster download speeds. Jupiter Research analyst Ian Fogg told the BB...

12  June  2008
XO Communications will team up with optical vendor Infinera next week to demonstrate how 100 Gigabit Ethernet traffic can be sent over 10 10Gbps wavelengths. XO, a competitive local exchange carrier based in Herndon, Va., says that it will send a 100GbE signal on a loop from the NXTComm08 convention floor in Las Vegas over its long-haul Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) network to Los Angeles and back. To conduct this test, XO says it will reply on Infinera's DTN DWDM system to switch and tra...

Mobile Operators Claim Falling Data Roaming Prices in Europe

11  June  2008
In an effort to avert price caps on data roaming charges by the European Union, mobile phone operators said Wednesday that the market is expanding rapidly and that prices are coming down of their own accord. Data roaming allows travellers to access multimedia services using their mobile phone or laptop. It also includes services such as sending and receiving SMS (Short Message Service) messages via a mobile phone. Viviane Reding, the European telecoms commissioner, is considering a plan to cap data ro...

ASA slaps down Vodafone 'unlimited' data claims

11  June  2008
Vodafone has today been ordered to withdraw an advert for one of its data packages which falsely implied customers could get unlimited mobile web access. The ad copy bellowed: "Any website, any time. £7.50 a month. Make the most of now." The small print whispered that a usage limit of 120MB per month applies. Vodafone argued against a complaint made to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), saying that the word "any" meant "some, or even the smallest amount of". Consumers would interpret the ad as...
