Google is the sleeping giant when it comes to advertising in video games. While the company dominates search advertising, it has yet to make a big splash in video games. That could change soon, as the company has been quietly testing its “AdSense for Games” product for months.
Sources close to the matter said that the company has developed an in-game advertising technology that allows it to insert video ads into games. In demos of the technology, a game character can introduce a video ad, saying somethin... |

AT&T will end the contract of any of its customers caught using peer-to-peer (P2P) software on mobile phones, the operator told the FCC.
Robert Quinn Jr., senior vice president in charge of federal regulation issues, wrote in a public letter to the FCC that “AT&T does not use network management tools to block the use of P2P applications by its mobile wireless broadband customers. However, AT&T’s terms of service for mobile wireless broadband customers prohibit all uses that may cause extreme network ... |

In an interview with Om Malik of GigaOm, Dell was asked about the company's plans in the smartphone industry. At first he gave a vague answer: "We are certainly looking at the whole smartphone category, but I wouldn't expect anything anytime soon." But when Malik pressed him about whether his company was more interested in a Symbian or Android OS for any potential handheld device, Dell was slightly more informative.

Patterson instead intends to upstage Google, which she quit in 2006 to develop a more comprehensive and efficient way to scour the Internet.

Just a week after AT&T dropped a stink bomb -- a pitifully low 46,000 new broadband subscribers adds in the second quarter -- Verizon said it grew its subscriber base by a grand total of 54,000 broadband subscribers. (As it turns out, the company lost 133,000 DSL subscribers during the quarter, but added 187,000 FiOS internet subscribers.)
Hey, at least the subscriber base is growing, but that's certainly not brag-worthy growth. To provide a little perspective: The company added 266,000 new subscribers i... |

The Internet is too slow for Google and the nation's telecom and cable companies are to blame. At least that's how Google sees it.

It's a pity the National Security Agency can't talk about its computational challenges, because it's leaving a lot of the boasting rights to Google.
In a blog posting on Friday the company shared some detail about the challenges of one aspect of its search operation, the Web indexing and processing that must take place before the results are delivered to users. The short version: Google has no choice but to think big.

The small town of Monticello, Minnesota seems an unlikely spot for a battle over city-owned fiber-to-the-home. The town, which is a distant commute to Minneapolis, thought it could better attract residents and business by building its own fiber-optic network. After a couple years of due diligence, the town held a referendum; 74 percent of voters agreed to fund the $25 million scheme. The city sought the needed municipal bonds, but the day before it closed on them, the local telco filed suit to stop the plan... |
