British telecoms regulator Ofcom has released interactive maps that depict the state of mobile coverage including 3G data services across the country.
Ofcom also published an updated Communications Infrastructure Report (pdf) which revealed good 2G network coverage of homes with 97 per cent of premises having a signal enough to make a call from outside their home.

Telecoms provider BT is accelerating its fibre broadband rollout. It now plans to offer "super-fast" internet speeds to two-thirds of UK premises by the end of 2014.
The target is a year ahead of its original plan.
The firm says its main product will offer maximum download speeds about 10 times faster than at present, at 70-100Mbps on average.
That will help it compete against Virgin Media's 100Mbps offer.

Kenya's available international bandwidth increased 25-fold between March and June this year, leaving the country using less than 1 percent of it, according to new figures from the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK).

The Nigerian economy must look to the ICT sector in order to build and develop in the near future, said Signal Alliance CEO Collins Onuegbu.
According to the Daily Trust, Onuegbu believes that the telecom and software industry in Nigeria is vital to achieve a global top 20 economy.

The European Commission is set to propose investing almost EUR9.2bn (R99 billion) in a massive rollout of super-fast broadband infrastructure and services across the European Union.
The plan is partly aimed at stimulating further investment in rural broadband.

Huawei's bid to participate in the trial of an LTE-based public safety network in the U.S. has been blocked, it emerged on Tuesday, marking the latest example of the U.S. government's security fears over the Chinese vendor's alleged ties with the Chinese military.

European telecommunications providers are opposing a European Union (EU) proposal that aims to financially penalise companies that do not invest in fibre-optic networks.
The EU has drafted a proposal that would force European telecoms operators such as Telefonica and France Telecom to lower the charges they levy on firms to rent their copper networks. Under the EU proposal, telecoms firms will be exempt from having to reduce their charges if they can show credible investments in fibre-optic networks.

BT Openreach has launched its Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) product, pledging it will offer downstream speeds of 300Mbps by spring next year.
At present, the service can hit 110Mbps downstream speeds and will be available in just six locations from the end of October.
More locations will be added and speeds will rise, however, with a 1Gbps service currently being trialled in Kesgrave, Suffolk.

The 3-6 month delay of the 4G spectrum auction will cost the UK economy between GBP183 million and GBP366 million, a report has claimed.
Ofcom was expected to have delivered the terms of the auction last month, but now the document will not appear until November, meaning the sell-off has been pushed back at least a quarter.

Virgin Mobile will postpone its decision to throttle the download speeds of heavy smartphone data customers from October until sometime in 2012.
The company made the move in conjunction with an announcement of two new Android smartphones, the LG Optimus S and HTC Wildfire S, Virgin's first HTC smartphone.
