Half of all Kenyans own mobile phones, the Economic Survey shows and ranks telecommunications as the economyҒs hottest growth sector.
The total number of mobile phone connections are nearly 20 million, and Safaricom, the market leader, has 15 million (about 78 per cent) while Zain Kenya has 14 per cent, Telkom four per cent, and Essar Yu one per cent.

Mobile phone operators should not delay their entry into the mobile VoIP market, according to a new report from Frost & Sullivan.
The analyst firm said that the mobile VoIP market in the US, Europe and Asia generated USD606m in revenues in 2008, and that this figure will leap to USD30bn by 2015.
The adoption of mobile VoIP by consumers has been spurred by the emergence of flat-rate mobile data pricing, growth in smartphone shipments and high-speed mobile broadband, the report said.

London is to get a city-wide blanket of Wi-Fi coverage by 2012 following a pledge from Mayor Boris Johnson.
The major was speaking at the Google Zeigeist event in Hertfordshire, and promised to make London one of the most connected cities in the world. The move comes as the UK capital continues to upgrade its infrastructure in time for the Olympic games in 2012.

Just one day after blocking access to Facebook, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority on Thursday ordered that country's Internet Service Providers to also block YouTube. The PTA says it has blocked the Google-owned video upload site for "growing sacrilegious content," according to the BBC.

Half of European households will have broadband speeds of 30Mbps (megabits per second) by 2020, the European Union has pledged.
It also promised universal broadband coverage by 2013 while getting half of Europeans using public services and shopping online by 2015.
It is part of the European Union's five year plan for the digital economy.

Finlands communications ministry has said its plan to offer high speed broadband to almost all of the country's residents by 2015 is well on track. In a statement the ministry said that the rollout may even be completed ahead of schedule.

Telecommunication service providers have turned to sharing fibre optic capacity to cut down expenses brought about by vandalism.

A group of local businessmen unveiled a AUD900 million plan to build a high speed undersea broadband cable. The 13,000 kilometre fibre cable will traverse between Australia, New Zealand and the United States and will boast five times the capacity of the current Southern Cross cable which connects through Hawaii.

In an ambitious plan, Britain's Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is urging Government to force ISPs to provide minimum broadband speeds of 8Mbps, saying that ISPs be "obliged to deliver a minimum and guaranteed connection speed of 8Mbits/sec direct to business premises" as part of the Digital Economy Bill.

Google has fired a warning shot over US telecommunications providers heads after announcing that the search company has plans to enter the broadband market.

British Telecom yesterday announced that it will be opening its fibre broadband ducts to rival internet service providers.
The move allows providers to offer their own customised fibre optic broadband packages in much the same way as they currently to using Local Loop Unbundling, or LLU. This saves ISPs the enormous cost of digging up roads and sidewalks, as well as increases competition in the broadband market.

According to the UKs largest WiFi provider, The Cloud, networks dealing with mobile internet are on the verge of a "meltdown."
A report released by the company today claims that traffic on mobile networks increase by a factor of 10 every year, rendering the industry a victim of its own success.
