Neotel is South Africa's first converged telecommunications network operator, providing a range of value-added voice services and data services for businesses, wholesale network operators and consumers using a pure-IP Next Generation Network. The core of the network is a high performance fibre optic backbone.
Neotel.co.za connects the major centres in South Africa to each other and to the world, directly linking the country into TATA Communications global Tier 1 network.
Locally Neotel uses CDMA2000 1x-EvDO, which is the most widely deployed of the global 3G standards today, and a first in South Africa. It offers peak download speeds of 2.4Mbps, with average data speeds around 400 - 600Kbps.
The backbone of Neotel's network consists of thousands of kilometres of fibre optic cable following railway lines and power lines across the country. Eskom and Transtel developed and patented techniques that led to the deployment of the fibre - the fibre is either wrapped around the wires or within the wires of power lines, suspended along the electrical masts of railway lines or directly buried alongside the lines.
The optical fibre technology being used also takes advantage of the latest advances in the industry. On major routes, every optical fibre is lit with a rainbow of coloured lasers (Dense Wave Division Multiplexing or DWDM), each carrying a separate high bandwidth signal at several Gigabits per second (billions of bits per second).
Adding the ability to switch these optical signals from one path to another at key nodes around the country (Optical Cross Connects) creates a network resilient to fibre breaks.
